Good News!
Everyday the world bombards us with bad
news. The newspapers are full of it. The TV news usually highlights it.
Even in our personal lives, we frequently hear bad news.
God has some bad news for us too. He
tells us in his Word that all of us "have sinned and fall short of the glory of
God" (Romans 3:23). Furthermore, "the wages of sin is death" (Romans
6:23). And he is not talking about just dying and being buried. Death means
eternal separation from the glory and blessings of God.
But there is good news! Even though we are all sinful, God still loves us very much. So much that he
sent his very own Son to be born on earth as a human being, to live among us, to be
persecuted by us, and to die for us. In some incredible way, when Jesus Christ died
a sinless death on the cross, he took upon himself all of our sin and suffered our
punishment. Then, he rose again to life and returned to his glory in heaven. This means that it is possible for
each of us to enjoy eternal life with God, which is a
free gift from him (John 3:16; Romans 6:23).
All we have to do is to believe that he is
the Son of God, admit that we are sinners, and believe that he did die for us and rose
again. God will take care of the rest!
Here is some more good news! God loves us so much, that he is willing to adopt each of us who believe in him as
his own child! (Romans 8:14-17) And God's love is forever! For "neither death
nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers,
neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us
from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord" (Romans 8:38-39). Paul
wrote, "If God is for us, who can be against us?"
Life in Christ is not always easy. In
this life we still have bodies that want to sin and we still must live with the results of
sin all around us. But God has given us a helper, the Holy Spirit, who give us the
strength and understanding to survive and be victorious. That's good news too!
There is a lot more to living a Christian life too. That is what church is
all about. A church is a group of sinners gathered by the Holy Spirit under the
headship of Christ, to worship God, to encourage one another, and to be God's servants in
the world.
